Dr.
Tom Connolly, a fourth degree black belt, also teaches Judo at the
Golden Dragon. Sport Judo is a more aggressive sport that incorporates
throws, arm bars, choking and grappling techniques.
Connolly,
an orthopedic surgeon at the Costello Center, began practicing Judo
at the age of 10. His father, a member of the Navy SEAL's underwater
demolition team, inspired him.
Connolly
has competed in many national and international events and credits
the sport with helping him travel the world. His knowledge of Judo
has helped him survive several accidents. "I've fallen down stairs
and have been hit by cars. The most important thing is to learn
how to fall," Connolly said. He
passes his expertise on to his sons, Jim and Chris, 10, and to his
wife, Heim. Heim is preparing for her black belt exam and helping
to teach the younger students at the center.
